Jacques Treyvaud

Upholsterer

Jacques has an all-consuming love of extremes, he alternates between the infinite horizon of the sky above and the infinitely small detail before his eyes – a stitch, for example. Details like these are unforgiving, and make up the life of any upholsterer who deals in precious materials. Born on the land, he has reared sheep since the age of 20 and cultivates truffle oaks. Silence, time and patience have all become boon companions over the years. Ever focused on his work, he admits with a smile that he is a man of few words. A picture is worth a thousand of them, and the same applies to his handicraft – furniture, curtains, wallpaper… He combines his touch and dexterity with a keen eye, his experience with his intuition, embracing projects and finding the right solutions to overcome the complexities of upholstering and the variety of materials, which are all afforded the status that they deserve. “Leather does not react in the same way as velvet,” he tells us. “Each texture has its own vibrations, its own character.”
His essential need for diversity goes hand in hand with his natural sense of freedom. Jacques abhors routine – it is in his genes. He chose the life of the soil and of the artisan over industry, the many and varied labours of the land and the demanding finesse of unique handcrafted work over the empty vessel of repetition. In short, he is a man of discernment, and one who does not shy away from combining his two seemingly disparate talents into one passion. After all, it’s what makes him happy.
